I brought my cat in on May 14th, because he was straining to pee and peeing outside his box, as well as picking at his back leg and licking his genitals more than normal - unusual for him. His primary was Dr. Coots, but on May 14th we were put with Dr. Rebeca Delazari. She did not introduce herself when she saw us, she did a urinalysis / ultrasound (to my knowledge she did not test his pee. They were not in the back long enough to gather a urine sample. She said she was taking him to the back for just an ultrasound). She told me she found crystals in his bladder in the ultrasound and diagnosed him with a UTI. She gave us clavamox and gabapentin, and said to bring him in for a check up once the medication was completed to see if the UTI was gone. What Dr. Rebeca she failed to mention is that crystals can be accompanied by a UTI but the UTI meds do nothing for dissolving / removing crystals. The only way to get rid of crystals is combination of prescription food - which was never mentioned at Alpine, I found this out at Sentinel (who was amazing) - to bring down his PH levels, and surgery. That is what my cat needed on May 14th when his crystals were still manageable. Had he been put on prescription food right away, my healthy cat would still be alive. All the clavamox and gabapentin did was relieve him enough that it appeared the problem was resolved. Because of what I was told by Dr. Rebeca, I was under the impression the clavamox would cure his crystals. After finishing the gabapentin and clavamox, he was urinating, using his box, playing, eating and drinking as normal, and woke up with a sudden life threatening blockage on Wednesday June 3. I called Alpine right away and was told he could be seen in between patients but I would have to drop him off. My cat was howling in pain, I was not going to drop him off to be seen in between patients. I rushed him to Sentinel where he was hospitalized. I paid $3,500 trying to save my cat - Sentinel sedated him a total of three times and placed three catheters trying to get his blockage under control for PU surgery, since the crystals had got out of control. During the third sedation, his heart stopped and they were unable to resuscitate him. He didn’t even get a chance to make it to the surgery room. He didn’t get to fully grow up. My cat was barely over a year old and was completely healthy. This is completely unacceptable. I do not appreciate that his crystals were not given the attention they deserved, as crystals in male cats is life threatening due to anatomy. All the clavamox that Dr. Rebeca prescribed did, was blanket the issue as his crystals grew, inevitably causing a life threatening blockage, which also put strain on his heart and kidneys due to not being able to urinate.

Dr Heidi has been my vet for all my animals since she came on board at Alpine. We love her, our dogs love her, our cats tolerate her lol
